WA Treasurer rejects call for payroll tax cut

Western Australian Treasurer Eric Ripper says he is in favour of tax relief but has rejected calls by the Business Council of Australia to cut payroll tax. Business Council president Michael Chaney has told the National Press Club it is ridiculous to have a tax on companies just because they employ people. Mr Chaney says some of the WA Government's record budget surplus of $2.3 billion should also be used to cut stamp duty for first home buyers. But Mr Ripper says if he moves too soon, the effect will be to push up demand for houses and increase pressure on prices. "I'd like to se a bit of slowing in the housing market and I'd like to see an assurance that our prosperity is going to continue before we make the decision to bring in further tax relief," he said.
